FORT ARMSTRONG SITE
The blockhouse pictured above is a replica, located on the western tip of Arsenal Island, and marks the location of Fort Armstrong. This replica was erected in 1916 as part of the celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the fort. Fort Armstrong became the focus of the Black Hawk War of 1832 when the Illinois Volunteers and United States Regulars gathered to pursue Chief Black Hawk up the Rock River. Many men who participated in the war rose to fame in later years. Among them were Major Zachary Taylor, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.
